Compunetics a Contributing Part of NASA X-Ray Project

Last month Compunetix sister company Compunetics, a leading manufacturer of rigid, flexible, and rigid-flex printed circuit boards, welcomed a special guest speaker to their manufacturing facilities. NASA astrophysicist, Dr. Joanne Hill-Kittle gave a talk about her project entitled PRAXys: The Polarimeter for Relativistic Astrophysical X-Ray Sources.

“X-ray polarization measurements of astrophysical sources reveal information that cannot be determined by other means. However, limitations in technology have only made possible a single measurement of the Crab Nebula in the 1970s. Since then scientists have worked hard to develop new technologies that can finally open up this window of discovery. Over the last ten years, scientists at Goddard Space Flight Center have been developing a gas-based detector called a Time Projection Chamber Polarimeter that will be sensitive enough to measure the polarization of black holes and other objects with a small mission to space.”

Compunetics helped to design and manufacture the detector for this important project. The detector is a multi-layer liquid crystal polymer printed circuit board with two mil lines and space. The end product has been tested under vigorous and stringent constraints at NASA and was deemed a success. The overall project was also named “Product of the Year” by Rogers, the material supplier, at the International Microwave Symposium.
